Facebook to pull Messages from app

In an effort to push users toward its Messenger app, Facebook will pull chat messages out of its primary apps.

Facebook says the update will initially roll out to a handful of countries in Europe, and will only be on Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch as well as Android. The change will not apply to iPad.

"Taking messages out of the Facebook app lets us focus on making Messenger even better for everyone rather than working on two messaging experiences," says the social network in a statement.
The story was first reported by TechCrunch.

Facebook has focused sharply on messaging services, most notably through its acquisition of WhatsApp for $16 billion.

During a keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress in February, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says WhatsApp and the company share the goal "to help connect everyone in the world."
"It's a great company, and it's a great fit for us," said Zuckerberg.
